چکیده

We study the adhesion between a cross-linked elastomer and a flat solid surface where polymer chains have been end-grafted. To understand the adhesive feature of such a system, one has to study both the origin of the grafted layer interdigitation with the network, and the endgrafted chains extraction out of the elastomer when it comes unstuck from the solid surface. We shall tackle here the first aspect for which we develop a partial interdigitation model that lets us analytically predict a critical surface grafting density σ∗ ≃ P 1 10N− 3 5 beyond which the layer no longer interdigitates with the elastomer. We then relate this result with recent adhesion measurements.

Role of Surface-Anchored Polymer Chains on the Adhesion of an Elastomer

We study the adhesion between an elastomer of cross-link index, P, and a flat solid surface where polymer chains of polymerisation index, N, have been end-grafted. To understand the adhesive feature of such a system, one has to study both the origin of the grafted layer interdigitation with the network and the end-grafted chain extraction out of the elastomer when it separates from the solid su...

Assembly of Nanoparticles using Surface-Grafted Orthogonal Polymer Gradients

Polymer-coated surfaces are routinely used in industrially important applications including prevention of biofouling (in fabrication of protein-resistant surfaces), improving stability of colloidal dispersions, surface lubrication, or enhancing wettability and adhesion. Polymer chains chemically bound to the surface represent a special class of polymer coatings that has gained considerable atte...

Rate-Dependent Adhesion between Opposed Perfluoropoly(alkyl ether) Layers: Dependence on Chain-End Functionality and Chain Length

Adhesion was measured repeatedly between opposed molecularly thin layers of perfluoropoly(alkyl ether)s on mica, with particular attention to the dependence of the adhesion on chain-end functionality and chain length of the polymer. The polymer layers were kept in contact for specified times that differed by 4 orders of magnitude (0.01-500 s) and then unloaded (separated) at rates that varied b...

Sliding friction between an elastomer network and a grafted polymer layer: the role of cooperative effects

We study the friction between a flat solid surface where polymer chains have been end-grafted and a cross-linked elastomer at low sliding velocity. The contribution of isolated grafted chains’ penetration in the sliding elastomer has been early identified as a weakly velocity dependent pull-out force. Recent experiments have shown that the interactions between the grafted chains at high graftin...

Thermodynamic Analysis of Polymer-Solid Adhesion: Sticker and Receptor Group Effects

Adhesion of dense linear polymer chains containing a small number of randomly distributed sticker groups (fX) to a solid substrate containing receptor groups (fY) has been analyzed by a single-chain scaling approach. An entanglement sink probability (ESP) model motivated by vector percolation explains the nonmonotonic influences of sticker concentration (fX), receptor concentration (fY), and th...
